Mastering the Pelvic Tilt: A Simple Exercise to Relieve Back Pain at Home
Back pain is one of the most common complaints we see at American Back Centers. Whether you’re dealing with chronic discomfort or recovering from an injury, simple at-home exercises can be a powerful tool in managing and preventing pain. One of the most effective techniques we recommend is the pelvic tilt—a foundational movement that strengthens your core and supports spinal alignment.
What Is a Pelvic Tilt?
The pelvic tilt is a low-impact exercise that targets your transverse abdominal muscles, often referred to as your “natural back brace.” This movement helps re-engage the core, stabilize the spine, and promote better posture—all without the need for equipment or advanced fitness levels.
How to Perform a Pelvic Tilt
-
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
-
Flatten your lower back against the floor by engaging your abdominal muscles.
-
As your spine flattens, your pelvis will tilt slightly upward.
-
Hold this engaged position for 5–10 seconds.
-
Relax and repeat.
Progressive Variations
Once you’ve mastered the basic pelvic tilt, you can challenge your core by adding movements like:
-
Knee to chest pulls
-
Side-to-side hip rolls
-
Single or double leg lifts
-
Bridging exercises (lifting hips while maintaining pelvic tilt)
Always reset your pelvic tilt before each new movement to maintain proper form and ensure maximum core engagement.
Daily Application
Pelvic tilt isn’t just for the floor:
-
While standing, sitting, or driving
-
During strength training or gym workouts
-
Even while doing everyday tasks like lifting groceries or household chores
By consistently engaging your transverse abdominals, you’re actively protecting your spine and building long-term core stability.
